MAYOR
Edward C. Codilla signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the implementation of the National
Greening Program in five barangays
namely Cabingtan, Bagong, Naungan, Lilo-an and Mas-in.
The
project is worth P3.1 million to be funded by DENR with P1 million counterpart
from the city government until 2016. It
involves planting of different trees species on 273 hectares in the mentioned barangays that were chosen for being
prone to floods and landslides.
One
of these is Lilo-an where Pagsangaan River is found. The river traverses 55 barangays but Lilo-an was chosen for
being the most flood-prone. DENR will spend P550,000 for site preparation and
planting of bamboo on both sides of the riverbanks. Workers will be hired from
the barangay itself.
Cabingtan gets the
highest allocation of P900,000 considering that two species (indigenous and
fruit trees) will be planted on 100 hectares of land. Other project locations
and their details are: Naungan (P723,350 mangroves 50 has.), Mas-in (P230,000
fuel wood 23 has.) and Bagong (P700,000 rattan 50 has.).
