THE
local government unit (LGU) is negotiating with Philippine Health Insurance
Corp. (PhilHealth) for the resumption of the LGU’s counterpart contribution for
barangay tanods’ premiums. This was
learned from City Social Welfare and Development Officer Marietta Legaspi during
the barangay visit in Mabini.
Legaspi
added that they are awaiting data from the National Household Targeting System
on Poverty Reduction to identify indigent families qualified for the full
premium subsidy under the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP) this year.
The data will help avoid unnecessary contributions.
The Ormoc LGU's counterpart for PhilHealth premiums of barangay tanods was initiated by the 12th Sangguniang Panlungsod through then Councilor Lea
Doris Capuyan-Villar who is now vice president of the Association of Barangay Chairmen. The LGU's subsidy was discontinued, however, when typhoon Yolanda struck Ormoc. It was during that time when PhilHealth opened its access to all Yolanda-affected communities.
Based
on official pronouncements, the PhilHealth subsidy for full premiums under the NHIP will benefit senior
citizens, indigents, elected and appointed barangay
officials, tanods, and barangay health workers. Said premium
subsidy will be funded through the allocated P37.06 billion for NHIP. By Joey
